So there you are at your camp site, tents all set up, food well catered for, excitement in the air.. You then start to think of what will really keep you occupied for the remainder of your camping days. For those of you with kids around, you know that you must act fast before boredom kicks in and chaos starts happening. A great way of spicing things up while camping is playing games. A little bit of creativity will go a long way in keeping everyone happy. Since this space will be your home for the length of your camping trip, why not make the most fun out of it. Join us on this exciting ride and discover what kind of games to play in a tent that can take your camping experience to another level.
What Am I
Let’s start with this funny one. The idea is for each participant to imitate the sound of an animal while the rest of the participants attempt to guess which animal it is. After someone has guessed the correct animal, the next participant in queue imitates a different animal; this continues until each person has participated. To make it a bit more funny, players can make body movements that imitate the animal in question. Now, how about we see you buzz and behave like a bee! Remember, a new animal must be chosen each turn.
Once Upon a Time
It is now time for storytelling. This game starts by choosing someone to kick off the story with an interesting topic. For example, the person who starts the story begins with “once upon a time, there lived a grandmother up in the mountains”, the next person picks up the story from there “and she was old with a long nose and big eyes”, this continues until the last person. You can go as many rounds as you’d like until you decide when the story should end. The more creative sentences you come up with, the better the story becomes. Who knew that just by exploring what kind of games to play in a tent you could become a “story teller”.
Broken Telephone
This one never gets old regardless of how many times you play it. The player that begins the game will think of a sentence, something that’s not so easy to grasp. For example “the grumpy grandpa grabbed his gray goose”. The player will then whisper this sentence to the person seated next to them, and it goes on until the last person has been whispered to. The idea is to add a twist to confuse people, say it as fast as possible with no second chances given. To make sure the first player keeps to his word, he will write the sentence on a piece of paper and keep it away. By the time the sentence reaches the last person ,it is bound to have been changed to something hilarious.
Grandma’s House
This is a fun mind game that will keep the kids involved too. The idea is to spell the word Grandma. The game starts with the first person saying something like “I’m going to grandma’s house and I’m bringing my favorite fruit”, the fruit must start with the letter G. The player may say grapes, the next person has to bring something that begins with the letter “r”, they could say raspberries. The next person has to bring something that begins with the letter “a”, they could say apples. This continues until the word grandma is spelled out. After the last person says something starting with “a”, you may repeat the word over and over again. To make the game more interesting, be creative and change up the sentences each time you repeat. It should be a fast-paced game, the fun comes in when people have to remember which letter they are on. If someone is wrong, eliminate them and keep the game moving. It ends when all players have been eliminated besides one, keeping everyone on their toes.
Card Games
There are so many fun and easy card games you can play in the tent. If you are camping as a couple or with the family it doesn’t matter, you will still have so many options when it comes to card games. You probably already know a few fun card games, if not I will explain a couple below:
Family Game
I like to call this game cops and robbers. You should have at least 5 players for this game to work best. Firstly, you will label 2 cards and one will represent the cop, and the other the robber. Usually I would use an ace as the cop, and the king as the robber. Now eliminate all other aces and kings from the deck and place them aside. The total cards needed are equal to the amount of players, while including the cop and robber card. For example, if 5 people are playing then have the ace, king, and add any 3 random other cards that act as civilian cards. Deal out the 5 cards at random and hide your cards from others.
Since we have the cards now dealt, I will explain how the game works. The robber is trying to wink at all of the other civilians, without getting caught by the cop. When the robber winks at a civilian it acts as he/she just robbed them, so the civilian must lay their card down and say “I have been robbed!”. However, the civilian must wait a couple seconds before announcing out loud to not completely give the robber away. If the cop notices who the robber is then they say “You’re under arrest” and place down their cop card. This means the round is over and you can deal the cards again. This game is really fun when you have more and more players!
Couples Game
When I go camping I play a few different games with my girlfriend, crazy eights, 31’s, and go fish. They are all fun games to play, I will explain how to play go fish. Since it is a couples version, I changed up a few little things to make it more interesting.
To start off the game hand out 7 cards each, then if any matching numbered cards place them face down. One person starts the game asking the other if they have a card that they would have. For example, if I had a 9 I would ask “do you have a 9?”. If not they would respond “go fish”, but if they do they hand it over. When your hand runs out then you pick up 7 more cards. Play until the deck is completely used, then count who has the most pairs at the end!
Conclusion
Whether your camping trip is with the family, kids, or even just couples, there is something in store for everyone. It’s a known fact that games tend to bring people together while creating memories. Make sure you bring along an open mind, and as an adult feel free to bring out the kid in you while playing these games. We hope with the above games to play in a tent, many smiles will be seen on people’s faces. Then again, as it is said, “a smile a day keeps the doctor away”.
